    pv001 Eden Miqedem

    Eden Miqedem

Just released and not yet in other stores, even in Israel, this is the newest ‘hit’ at Olam Qatan and it is our featured album – which was playing in the background when you loaded our website. The words which you heard are from the song Yedid Nefesh. They say: “Friend of the soul, draw your servant… (to) run like a gazelle and prostrate before your splendor…. My soul is sick with love for you. Please my God heal her please.” This is the popular medieval Jewish hymn which is closest in spirit to classical Sufi poetry. But if you listen carefully you may notice that the pronunciation of the Aramaic words of this song (and the Hebrew of the others) actually sounds more like Arabic. Actually, it is pronounced like Yeminite Hebrew, which is the closest thing to ancient spoken Hebrew that remains. There are also songs in Arabic and English on this album. The Arabic and electronic rhythms, the electric guitar and oriental instruments, creates a sound similar to what you might hear in Arab East Jerusalem today. Along with the Arab violinist/oud-player, the line-up of Jewish musicians is much the same as Shacharit. But here we have a blending of East and West which is informed by a conscious yearning for the God who is revealed – and also hidden – in both Judaism and Islam. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Shmuel Nelson has made a long journey, thus far: from American Jewish-Christian roots into Japanese Zen Buddhism, to become newly religious in Israel while feeling drawn to Islam as well as Judaism. He sings, “If there was such a thing as revelation… I’d do and I’d hear” (echoing the response of the People of Israel at Mount Sinai). In this music, it is not only the Jew and the Muslim but also the traditional and the modern seeker who meet – within ourselves. If that sounds like an obscure niche, you might consider that Shmuel and his ensemble have recently become a favorite ‘alternative’ band for weddings here in Jerusalem. With notes, mainly in English.
